National Cancer Prevention Month is dedicated to raise awareness about the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices to lower our risk of cancer.

Some tips for reducing our risk of cancer:

  • Maintain a healthy weight and active lifestyle. This includes limiting our intake of alcohol, processed meats, and getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day.
  • Avoid smoking and tobacco products. Tobacco products have harmful chemicals that can damage DNA and cause cancer. If you want help quitting tobacco, talk to your healthcare provider, and check into your healthcare plan to identify available options.
  • Sun protection. We should limit our exposure to the sun especially during the peak times between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. It is best to use sunscreen and protective clothing such as hats and sunglasses.
  • Get immunized and screened regularly. Certain viruses can cause cancer, but by getting vaccinated we greatly reduce our risk. Regular screenings can detect cancer early and maximize our chances of successful treatment.
