National Yoga Month
The Department of Health and Wellness officially declared September as National Yoga Month in 2008 to help raise awareness and educate people about the health benefits of yoga.
The practice of yoga can offer physical and mental health benefits. Yoga combines breathing exercises, meditation and poses, which are known to help build strength, awareness and harmony in both the mind and body.
There is evidence that yoga can help people manage stress, which is known to affect your mental and physical health. Stress can manifest in many ways, including tension, anxiety, headaches, inability to concentrate, neck and back pain, and sleep problems. Regular practice of yoga can help lessen chronic pain, such as headaches, lower back pain, and arthritis. Yoga can help relax the mind, create calmness, and relieve chronic stress patterns.
There are many different types of yoga practices that offer a range of options for “every body” type to start at varying fitness levels. Beginners are welcome to try it.
