Glaucoma Awareness Month
January is a pivotal time in the promotion efforts of National Glaucoma Awareness to prevent the spread of the disease. Glaucoma is a cluster of eye diseases that gradually takes the sight of an individual without warning. In the United States, there are approximately 120,000 individuals that are blind from glaucoma. There are no symptoms of Glaucoma and once vision is lost it is irreversible. Experts suggest the most effective way to prevent this disease is through regular examination visits to the eye doctor. Early detection is vital to stopping the development of this disease.
To help spread awareness, there are several different things you can do such as:
- Talk to friends and family about glaucoma. If you have glaucoma, don’t keep it a secret. Let your family members know.
- Refer a friend to an eye doctor
- Request to have free educational information sent to you by your local eye doctor, or visit www.glaucoma.org
- Get involved in your community through fundraisers, information sessions, group discussions, and more.
