Since 1999, October has been the month designated to observe Health Literacy Month. Understanding health, how it affects you, as well as how to communicate with trusted professionals can either ‘make or break’ certain encounters. Health care providers should always go the extra mile to communicate information clearly, concisely, and in a manner in which the patient can understand. However, it is also the responsibility of the patient to make the most effort possible to understand their own health. Understanding your own health can help you better communicate your feelings, allows you to understand symptoms as they are happening, and possibly even take proactive approaches to governing your own health.

According to the Institute of Healthcare Advancement, “The theme for Health Literacy Month is ‘Be a Health Literacy Hero.’ It’s about taking action and finding ways to improve health communication. Health Literacy Heroes are individuals, teams, or organizations who not only identify health literacy problems but also act to solve them.”
