September is Whole Grains Month! Chances are that you have probably heard the term “whole grain” before. But what is a whole grain? And what makes them part of a healthy diet? Read more…

Whole grains include grains like wheat, corn, rice, oats, barley, quinoa, and more, but only when they are eaten in their “whole” form. A whole grain has three parts: the bran, the endosperm, and the germ. Each part gives us different vitamins and minerals, so it is important that we consume the “whole” thing! This means choosing foods like “whole wheat bread” over “white bread”, or “whole grain brown rice” over “white rice”.

The nutrients contained in whole grain foods may help reduce the risk of high cholesterol, heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. When you are shopping, you can look for the “Whole Grain Stamp” to help guide you to healthier whole grain choices.
