When looking at health, it is more than the absence of disease. Health is more than exercising and eating right. Health also extends to having a positive handle on spirituality, finances, as well as social relationships. As we observe Social Wellness Monthin July, we will examine various types of social relationships and the importance of having a strong social network.

Check in with your family and friends. No matter how busy you may be or how busy they may be, it’s important to at least make the effort. Family and friends are the cornerstones of most strong social systems. If needed, they are there to provide a listening ear, give sound advice, and to even take part in a good laugh. Social wellness encourages us to build those strong relationships and spend time with those who matter the most. People with strong social networks respond better to stress and have healthier cardiovascular systems. Having a strong social network also improves the body’s immune system and the ability to fight off infectious diseases.

To enhance our sense of social wellness, here are some suggestions:

  • Envision staff, faculty, students, and members of the community as individuals.
  • Establish and maintain satisfying interpersonal relationships.
  • Develop a sense of belonging.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Communicate opinions, thoughts, and feelings with civility.
  • Pursue opportunities for enjoyment of shared interests with others.
  • Create time for fun.
